We Are Free!

Today I am thankful for the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Our little family had a terrific day celebrating those freedoms. We started out the day by fishing at High Point City Lake Park. Using our MP3 player, we listened to praise music while Bryan and Dylan cast their fishing poles and reeled in their tiny fish. How wonderful to live in a country where we can sing praises to our Heavenly Father in the middle of a public park! After fishing, we rode the train around the park with tons of other families that were out enjoying the day. So many ethnicities living in the same community, what a blessing!  Our evening was spent swimming and grilling hamburgers with family. We also had a lot of fun with fireworks (the legal kind, of course). As I watched my husband teaching my son how to safely light a firework and move away quickly, I was immediately grateful for the ability to teach our children as we see fit and for the endless possibilities that are available to them as Americans.

There are so many folks around the world who do not live with the freedoms we enjoy. Most Americans take these freedoms for granted. We complain when we have to go to work and we complain we when lose our jobs. We say we are grateful for the ability to worship freely yet many of us do not even take part in that privilege. We all want the right to a fair trial but we whine about having to serve on a jury. Can you imagine living in a place where the number of children we have is decided by the government or  having your hand cut off for stealing? What if your family lived in constant fear for your lives or your children were taken and forced to fight in a militia? What if, as women, we were forced to wear to certain attire and not allowed to speak in public? What if you could be imprisoned for owning a Bible or killed for professing your faith?

We live with freedoms that many countries are fighting for. We live in a place that only exists in dreams for many people. I am thankful for those freedoms and for the men and women who have sacrificed for them. I am thankful for this country and the opportunity to live my life here. I am thankful to live in a place where WE ARE FREE!

Happy Independence Day!
